What is Finasteride used for?
Propecia (Finasteride) is used to treat men with male pattern hair loss to increase hair growth on the scalp and to prevent further hair loss.

What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning and losing of the hair on the scalp. Often, this results in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head. Doctors believe male pattern hair loss is due to heredity and is dependent on hormonal effects. Doctors refer to this type of hair loss as androgenetic alopecia.

Will Finasteride work for me?
For most men, Propecia increases the number of scalp hairs, helping to fill in thin or balding areas of the scalp. Men taking Propecia noted a slowing of hair loss during two years of use.

What are the possible side effects of Propecia?
In clinical trials, Propecia was very well tolerated in men, with most patients reporting no serious side effects. The principal side effects associated with finasteride were decreased libido (1.8% of Finasteride patients versus 1.3% on placebo) and erectile dysfunction (1.3% Finasteride versus 0.7% placebo). All of these side effects resolved upon discontinuation of therapy, and also resolved in many men who preferred to continue therapy.
